An American journalist has gone missing in the Congolese province when rebels attacked

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) lost an American journalist and at least nine local guards. This happened after a rebel attack on a security post at the natural reserve of okapis, the Associated Press reports.

According to the Agency, the incident occurred on Friday, July 14, at 40 km from the town of MAMBASA. In the attack a firefight started. Thus two British journalists and five security guards of the national Park managed to escape.

Authorities suggest that the American guards were abducted, but until it is proven. The fate of the missing is not known, their search brought army units.

As suggested by the center for the study of peace and protection of human rights, the attack most likely committed by the group “Mai-Mai Simba”.

AP notes that kidnapping with ransom is a common practice in the Eastern part of the DRC.
