The Portuguese intelligence officer charged with espionage in favor of Russia

The Prosecutor’s office of Portugal presented the employee of the National intelligence service (SIS) charged with espionage in favor of Russia. On it informs Agency Reuters.

As stated by the Department, charges were also charged in absentia there is no one citizen of Russia, which in Portugal is considered the employee of the foreign intelligence Service (SVR). “According to the indictment, an employee of the SIS was recruited by the RAF and handed over the cash, secret government information, access to which is had by the nature of their work”, – stated in the message of Prosecutor’s office.

The defendants were arrested in Rome in may 2016 at the request of the Portuguese authorities. According to Reuters, the Portuguese accused the work of exploration of the Russian Federation, at the time of arrest were in possession of the amount of €10 thousand euros ($11 million) in cash, and the alleged SVR – a handwritten document that allegedly contained secret information. Reuters quotes the approval by the Portuguese media that the information allegedly passed the Russian intelligence officer Portugal, could relate to the activities of the EU and NATO.

An Italian court in July last year refused to extradite a Russian citizen suspected in the fact that he is a intelligence officer. He was released and returned to Russia. The SIS officer was sent to Portugal, where he was taken into custody, and then was placed under house arrest.

Reuters does not name the Portuguese, accused of espionage in favor of Russia. However, earlier it was reported that a Frederico Karvalju Lived on 22 may last year was arrested in Rome allegedly in receipt of classified documents.
