“Hessian fly.” Why the wife of the last Russian Tsar did not like the way people

Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova in the country, a lot of insulting nicknames, was considered a German spy, a traitor and almost the destroyer of Russia. Perhaps, she gave a reason.

145 years ago, on 6 June 1872 in the family of Grand Duke of Hesse and the Rhine was born the fourth daughter. She was named Victoria Alice Helena Louise Beatrice of Hesse-Darmstadt. Grandmother, the Queen, called her Sunny — Sunshine. Home — Alix. In Russia, where she was destined to become the last Empress, the baptism in the Orthodox faith and received the name Alexandra Feodorovna. For the eyes — the nickname of the “Hessian fly.”

The perception of the rulers of the people, or, as expressed in the scientific community, the representation of power is an important moment in the awareness of certain historical periods. This is especially true of the great upheaval like the revolution or the era of reform.

Only that power was solely from God and doubt their legitimacy from the people is not aroused. But something happens, and people immediately begin to produce stories and legends about their leaders. Peter the Great became not only the king-carpenter, but the Antichrist, and Ivan the terrible becomes “Ivashka, potentates bloody”. The same nickname was rewarded and the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. With his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna, something similar happened. With only one difference. If Nicholas of the first still pinned some hopes, that the Empress we disliked immediately and entirely.

The voice of the people

After the last Romanov family was canonized, the memory of how it was perceived by the people of Alexandra Feodorovna, trying to conceal leaf memories. For example, such: “the Empress organized 4 big Bazaar in favor of tuberculosis in 1911, 1912, 1913 and 1914 ; they brought a lot of money. She worked, painted and embroidered the Bazaar, and, despite his weak health, the entire day was standing at the kiosk, surrounded by a huge crowd of people. Little Alexey standing beside it on the counter, holding the handle with things cheering crowd. The enthusiasm of the population was not.” However, just a few lines later the author of these memoirs, lady-in-waiting and closest friend of the Empress Anna Vyrubova, makes a demonstrative clause:

People, at that time untouched by revolutionary propaganda, adored Majesty, and it should never be forgotten.

Interesting case. In 1911, the people, in the opinion of the court, it turns out, is full of admiration for his Queen. Blindness is amazing. Because the people, the past and the shame of the Russo-Japanese war and Revolution 1905-1907, has a completely different opinion. Here’s a snippet of one of the Ural tale: “the Queen after the nine hundred and fifth year, the stone Krasnenkoe could not see. Whether she’s red flags imagined, or than another memory stirs, but only from the fifth year to the Queen with a red stone and not come in his head scream, all Russian words lose and German will get angry at me”.

No delight here and does not smell. Rather, sarcasm. And a similar attitude to the person Alexandra had to watch literally from the first day. Moreover, she, wittingly or unwittingly, gave to this occasion. Says the same of Anna Vyrubova:

When Alexandra has just arrived in Russia, she wrote to the Countess Rantzau, the lady-in-waiting of his sister, Princess Irene: “My husband everywhere surrounded by hypocrisy and mendacity. I feel that there is no one who could be his actual support. Few like him and their country”.

Somehow, it is considered as an exceptionally highly spiritual message, full of sorrow and sadness. In fact it is full of arrogance and conceit. Barely arriving in a foreign country for themselves and have not yet learned language, the wife of the Emperor immediately begins to insult his subjects. According to her expert opinion, the Russians do not love their country and everything, potential traitors.

The reverse side of “adoration”

Word — not a Sparrow, and murder will not hide. What was the domain of the higher realms, after a couple of days through the servants, stokers and drivers become available to the General public. And no wonder that after such a sparkling performance of the new Queen, the police starts to register more and more trials as “lese majeste”.

Alexandra was able to remember everything. Even what she was not to blame. So, the wedding of Nicholas and Alexandra, and their whole honeymoon coincided with the mourning for the just-deceased father, Nicholas, to the Emperor Alexander III. Conclusion the people were made instant. And somewhat prophetic:

German this, read on a coffin we drove, will bring misfortune.

Subsequently subjected to ridicule everything that comes from Alexandra Feodorovna. All of her undertakings — at times really good and necessary — became the target of bullying. Sometimes in a very cynical way. Curiously, the king himself was not affected, and even regret. Here’s a snippet of the Protocol of one of the cases of “lese Majesty”: the Revolution of 1905-1907, the citizen of Kazan 31 year old, pointing to a portrait of the Royal family, said:

This is the first b… And her daughter b… And they all go to him… But as the sovereign of our pity — they used… German, it deceiving, because the son is not his, and swing!

To write off this “beauty” on the machinations of the Freemasons or Bolsheviks will not work. At least for the reason that 80% of convictions in such cases have been imposed on the farmers, the agitation among which those Bolsheviks will start very soon — when the farmers will get under the call and become soldiers.

However, and then to agitate specifically against the Empress no there was no need. From the beginning of the war it has declared a German spy and a traitor. This popular opinion was so widespread that it has reached ears that were not intended. Here is what the Vice-Consul of great Britain in Moscow, Bruce Lockhart: “there are several good stories concerning the germanophile tendencies of the Empress. Here is one of the best. The Prince’s crying. Nanny says, “Baby, why are you crying?” “Well, when we beat our crying dad, when the Germans — mother, and when I cry?”.

In the war, among other nicknames Alexandra Feodorovna appears and the “Hessian fly.” This insect really is, is a serious pest that attacks rye and wheat that can kill the crop almost entirely. When you consider that the February Revolution started with shortage of bread, one is forced to think about the fact that sometimes the voice of the people is indeed the voice of God.
