“The split time is probably very close (.. .) and we see no way to prevent complete separation of the iceberg”, — said the participant of the study group Adrian Luckman.
According to scientists, the rift between the separating station and the main array of Larsen glacier in the North-West Antarctica has increased by 17 km in the last six days. Now part of the glacier are connected by only one segment with a length of 13 km.
According to the predictions of the researchers, the separation of the glacier such a large size may lead to destruction of the glacier Larsen and, consequently, a sharp rise in sea level.
The scientists noted that the process of changing geography of the ice sheet is accelerating due to global warming caused by human activity.
