Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the military buildup in the far East and the Kuril Islands is not the initiative of Russia.

He said this during the meeting with heads of Russian and foreign news agencies on the sidelines of SPIEF.

“That’s a NATO base moving down to our Western borders. So what we need to do, to look at what is limp? No, it is not. We react accordingly,” — said Putin.

According to him, the same thing happens in the East. He stressed that such actions “push” the arms race.

“Are you all quiet about it. The world is silent as if nothing is happening,” the President said to the audience.

June 1 started the first day of the official programme of the St. Petersburg international economic forum (SPIEF).
