Rex Tillerson

The administration of the President of the United States Donald trump is considering restarting talks with Russia on resolving the situation in Ukraine. On Sunday, may 28, the newspaper reported The Washington Post.

In the material indicates that the initiative is overseen by the Secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who, according to the newspaper’s sources, has already discussed the issue with Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. “The idea Tillerson is to restart the kind of peace negotiations, which in 2016 was attended by the administration [Barack] Obama (the former President of the USA — approx. “Of the tape.ru”), but with the hope that the new circumstances and personalities will give the best result”, — the newspaper writes.

The publication also indicates that Tillerson wants to appoint a special envoy from the state Department for this initiative. In particular, this person will negotiate with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov.

The article said that the investigation into “the interference of the Russian government in the presidential election of 2016,” may “complicate things”. The us Congress insist on the introduction of new anti-American sanctions, but legislators from both parties very sceptical of any attempt by trump to make a deal with Moscow, the newspaper notes.

USA, member States of the European Union, as well as a number of other countries have introduced restrictive measures against Russia in 2014 and linking them with entry into the Russian Federation of the Crimea, and then — with the conflict in the South-East of Ukraine. In response, Moscow imposed a ban on food exports from most countries, which supported anti-Russian sanctions.

The abolition of restrictive measures Western countries linked to the implementation by Moscow of Minsk agreements — a package of measures to stabilize the situation in the South-East of Ukraine. The document, in particular, envisages a ceasefire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the contact line of the warring parties, and constitutional reform in Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that is not a party to the conflict, and the responsibility for the implementation of the agreements lies on the Kiev authorities. Also in Russia emphasize that the process of reunification of the Crimea is fully consistent with international norms.
