The head of the Italian government Paolo Gentiloni in a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that assesses the relations of Moscow and Rome as successful and even excellent. Italian Prime Minister also said that it is important to talk with Putin ahead of the summit of the group of seven and discuss relevant issues, reports RIA “Novosti”.

“I am delighted to meet with you and discuss how issues relating to relations between Russia and Italy, which I personally appreciate as extremely successful, I would even say excellent, and questions are quite sensitive relating to international relations,” Gentiloni said.

Earlier, the Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov expressed the opinion that Gentiloni will try to find out Moscow’s position on a wide range of issues on the global agenda ahead of the summit “seven”, reports TASS.

However, Putin meeting with Italian Prime Minister said that the trade turnover between Russia and Italy in January-February 2017 rose by 28%.

“Unfortunately, we have seen some decline in the trade turnover. But once you become Prime Minister, the trade turnover began to grow,” – said Putin.

In late April, Gentiloni said that Italy is not going to break EU unity on the issue of sanctions against Russia, but he expressed the opinion that the West should continue the dialogue with Moscow, but to maintain its unity.
