The speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko has accepted the invitation of the head of the Syrian Parliament Khadii Abbas to visit the country. It is reported RIA Novosti on Tuesday, April 11.
“Many of my colleagues and parliaments have visited the Syrian Arab Republic. I accepted the invitation with gratitude, and we agreed through diplomatic channels, to coordinate a mutually convenient time,” Matviyenko said after a meeting with Abbas, which was held in Moscow.
The Federation Council speaker also said that Russia and Syria to sign a Memorandum on inter-parliamentary cooperation. This can occur either at the session of the Interparliamentary Union in St. Petersburg in October, or during the return visit of the delegation of the upper house of the Russian Parliament to Syria, she said.
Recent visit of Russian parliamentarians to Syria was held on March 20. The delegation comprised of members of all four factions. Before this, the deputies of the state Duma visited Syria in early February. During the trip they met with President Bashar al-Assad and All Abbas.
The Federation Council members were in Syria in late December. Together with the MEPs they discussed with Assad the upcoming ceasefire in the country.
