Trump: Germany owes NATO and the United States huge amounts of money for security

On Friday, the President of the United States reiterated the US commitment to NATO and demanded from the allies allocation at least 2% of GDP on defense.

MOSCOW, March 18. /TASS/. The President of the United States Donald trump believes that Germany owed the United States and NATO huge sums for security of the country. About this American leader wrote on Saturday on his page on the microblogging network Twitter on the next day after meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington.

“Meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel was great. However, Germany is obliged to pay US and NATO huge sums it owes for the powerful and very expensive defense that they provide for the country,” wrote trump.

On Friday, the US President reiterated the US commitment to NATO and demanded from the allies allocation at least 2% of GDP on defense

“I have reiterated to the Chancellor Merkel its strong support for NATO and the need for our NATO allies to pay their fair share for the defense,” he said.

Merkel said that Berlin is configured to perform its obligations to NATO to increase defence spending to 2% of GDP by 2024.

Germany joined NATO in 1955. The country was placed combat units of the 7th U.S. army, who number in the midst of the cold war exceeded 200 thousand. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, the number of American troops in West Germany was sharply reduced to several tens of thousands. However, nuclear weapons and air bases to NATO in the Western Federal States of Germany still remain.

In accordance with the Treaty on the final settlement with respect to Germany (1990), no foreign troops and nuclear weapons can be stationed on the territory of the former GDR.
