Foreign Ministry: closure of “Radio News” in Ukraine – an attack on freedom of speech

The Russian foreign Ministry has described the decision of the National Council on television and radio broadcasting of Ukraine not to renew the broadcasting license of “Radio News” direct attack on freedom of speech. This was stated by the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The basis for this decision, among other things, was insufficient, in the opinion of the staff of the National Council on television and radio broadcasting of Ukraine, the number of programs in the Ukrainian language.

“We regard the closure of the radio station as a direct attack on freedom of speech. Western curators call on Ukraine to provide adequate influence on Kiev authorities to respect taken of relevant international obligations”, – noted in the Russian dipvedomstva.

The foreign Ministry added that they expect an appropriate reaction from the OSCE representative on freedom of the media Dunja Mijatovic. Diplomats stressed that this is not the first case of “suppression of dissent in Ukraine”.

In the commentary of the Russian foreign Ministry says that thus Kyiv tries to strictly limit the activities of independent media seeking to convey to the audience an alternative to the government point of view, the view of events in the country and abroad.
