Shoigu reported to Putin on the capture of Palmyra

The Syrian army, backed by Russian Air and space forces (VKS RF) freed Palmyra from terrorists. This statement was made by the Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu. It is reported TASS with reference to the press-Secretary of Russian President Dmitry Peskov.

In may 2015, militants of the banned terrorist organization “Islamic state” (ISIS) occupied Palmyra. The city was liberated in March 2016 the Syrian army, backed by Russian aviation. During the liberation operations aircraft videoconferencing inflicted pinpoint strikes on positions of extremists. After the operation the Russian sappers cleared the city.

However, on 11 December 2016 control over Palmyra was again passed into the hands of militants. During the retreat of the Syrian troops left the city about 80 percent of the local population.

During the occupation of the city by the militants were destroyed unique monuments: triumphal arch, the colonnade, the temple Balsamina, the sanctuary of the Supreme Semitic deity Bela.
