The Russian foreign Ministry considers untrue the information published in the newspaper the New York Times article “a Great red seal, Russia marks the material, which she classifies as implausible”. This is stated in a statement posted on the Ministry’s website under the heading “Examples of publications, replicated false information about Russia.”

“We have to say that (the author of the article – approx. TASS) Neil MacFarquhar did not understand or did not want to hear our position, – said in depodesta. – It specifies, in particular, contained in the article is the assertion that Russia “announces fake any articles that she does not like”, and also charges to our address in “creating an alternate reality. These allegations are untrue”.

As explained in the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, this article also adds to the ranks of a new category dedicated to fake news, for two reasons: “first, the position of the Russian side deliberately distorted, and secondly, not only the objective analysis of similar projects in Russian Euro-Atlantic institutions, but even their mention”.

While the foreign Ministry thanked the author MacFarquhar “for the attention of the foreign Ministry’s website and try to understand the reasons that prompted us to begin this important work.”

“I would like to reiterate that we are committed to freedom of speech in favour of the interested exchange of opinions, – stated in the message. We are not going to create obstacles for journalists or ban any publication in Russia, of course, subject to their compliance with the Russian legislation”.

“We hope that in The New York Times still will hear us and will continue to be objective and to elaborate on the material relating to the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Russia, our position, – the Ministry added. – I hope the journalists of this newspaper will to fight “misinformation and the creation of an alternative reality” not only in Russia but also at home, as well as in other major European capitals”.
