Politico: the United States could withdraw from the UN Council on human rights

WASHINGTON, Feb 26 — RIA Novosti. The administration of the President of the United States Donald trump is considering the possibility of withdrawing from the UN Council on human rights, according to the magazine Politico, citing current and former American officials.

According to sources, the US can take this step due to the fact that the Council probably had an impact on the adoption of a UN resolution condemning Israeli settlement activity.

At the next session of the UN Council on human rights will be discussed, but any decision by the U.S. not expected, assured the interlocutors Politico.

In the accepted UN resolution of December 23, Israel’s actions were regarded as a “gross violation” of international laws. The document was supported by 14 members of the security Council, the U.S. delegation abstained in the vote, not applying a veto power, as urged by the Israeli authorities.

The Council on human rights UN international human rights body within the organization, it replaced the Commission on human rights. It is considered a subsidiary organ of the UN General Assembly. The first meeting of the Council held in 2006. Members of the General Assembly shall elect the members of the HRC, which occupy 47 seats in the Council.
