UN Secretary-General, antónio Guterres, expressed his condolences to the government and people of Russia, to the family and friends of the permanent representative of Russia to the UN Vitaly Churkin, who died February 20, Monday.

Also condolences told members of the UN Security Council, saying “deeply saddened” by the death of “an outstanding Russian diplomat”.

Vitaly Churkin died the day before his 65th birthday in new York. The official cause of death was not disclosed. As told by CBS News, press Secretary of the Russian Embassy in the United States, the diplomatic mission believes that the cause of death Churkin had a heart attack. He felt ill in the building of the Russian mission to the UN and was taken to Columbia-Presbyterian hospital, where he died.

As reported by the New York Post, citing sources, when Churkin arrived at a medical facility, he was already unconscious and in need of carrying out cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
