Iraqi authorities announced the beginning of the liberation of the Western part of Mosul

The Prime Minister of Iraq Haidar al-Abadi announced the start of operations to liberate the Western part of Mosul, who is being held by the militants of the terrorist group “Islamic state” (IG, is prohibited in Russia). It is reported Sunday, February 19, TASS reported.

As noted by al-Abadi, a priority — salvation from the hands of terrorists civilians. In the office for the coordination of humanitarian Affairs UN (OCHA) reported that preparing for a new influx of refugees from Mosul, the number of which can reach 400 thousand people. To the South of the city, built refugee centers, as well as procurement of essential goods.

On February 18, according to Reuters, Iraqi planes dropped on the Western part of Mosul millions of leaflets warning local residents about the beginning of hostilities in the area. Other leaflets called for terrorists to “lay down their arms and surrender.”

Ground military operation to liberate Mosul began on 17 October 2016. It involved units of the regular Iraqi army, the Kurdish militia and formation of volunteers. The international coalition led by the United States provides air and artillery support. By 18 January 2017 military completely liberated the Eastern part of the city.
