Russia’s Ambassador to Japan commented on the reports about the transfer of the Kuril Islands

Russian Ambassador to Japan Evgeny Afanasiev has denied the rumors about the exchange of two of the Kuril Islands to Japanese investment. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“Our side has repeatedly stated that we do not sell territories. However, the subject of the peace Treaty and cooperation in the South Kuril Islands is more than one year subject to bilateral consultations, which are conducted behind closed doors,” – said Afanasiev.

He also called speculation and fantasy messages the transfer of the Kuril Islands to Japan and recommended “patience”.

In December 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed on the economic cooperation between the two countries, aimed at creating a favorable atmosphere for signing of the peace Treaty.
