Turkmenistan holds presidential election

At 07:00 local time (05:00 GMT) in Turkmenistan was opened more than 2.5 thousand polling stations. 39 work stations at the diplomatic missions of the Republic abroad.

In Russia, citizens of Turkmenistan could vote in the Embassy of Republic in Moscow and the Consulate in Astrakhan.

At the moment, voted 823 257 people or 25.5% of registered voters, reports TASS.

For the presidency claimed nine people. A favorite is the incumbent head of state Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

Also in the presidential race: candidate of the Party of Industrialists and entrepreneurs Bekmyrat Atalyev, the representative of the Agrarian party Durdygul Orazov and six candidates, nominated by initiative group of citizens.

We will remind, in September of last year, Turkmenistan adopted a new Constitution. According to her, the presidential term extended from five to seven years, and eliminated the upper age limit of the candidate (previously it was 70). 59-year-old Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has been in power since 2007 and was re-elected for a second term in 2012.
