Putin thanked Nazarbayev for organization of negotiations on Syria

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin thanked the Kazakh leader Nursultan Nazarbayev for the organization and carrying out in Astana of the international meeting on Syria. He stated this during a telephone conversation, said the message published on the Kremlin website on Saturday, January 28.

“Both sides stressed that we have managed to impart a serious impetus to ensure the peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict,” the document says.

In Astana on 23-24 January the negotiations of the delegations of the armed opposition and the Syrian government under the mediation of Russia and Turkey. One of the major outcomes of the meeting was that representatives of the official Damascus and the opposition managed to sit at the negotiating table, although direct contact between them never took place. In addition, Moscow, Tehran and Ankara agreed to establish a tripartite mechanism for monitoring observance of the truce in Syria.

During the negotiations the Russian delegation has handed over to representatives of the armed Syrian opposition proposals for amendments to the Constitution of the SAR. Later it was reported that Syrian authorities have rejected a few items in the Russian draft Constitution. Currently, Syria has a Constitution, adopted in 2012.
