The President of Mexico refused to go to Washington for a meeting with trump

Enrique Peña Nieto

Mexican President Enrique peña Nieto decided to cancel his trip to Washington, where he planned to meet with the American leader Donald trump. It is reported by Azteca Noticias on Thursday, January 26.

“We informed the White house that we would not attend the meeting, scheduled for Tuesday [31 January],” reads the statement. While Nieto said he was ready to cooperate with the United States for reaching an agreement to benefit both countries.

Earlier on 26 January it was reported that trump has threatened a Mexican counterpart to cancel the visit because of its position on the construction of the wall on the border between the two countries.

“The trade deficit of the USA with Mexico amounts to $ 60 billion. NAFTA was initially one-sided, we lost a huge number of jobs and companies. If Mexico doesn’t want to pay for much-needed wall, it is better to cancel the upcoming meeting”, — said the American leader.

A few hours earlier on the same day, Nieto expressed regret and condemned the signing of the American leader Donald trump decree on the construction of the wall on the border between the two countries. “I’ve talked about this many times: Mexico does not pay for any wall,” he said.

25 Jan trump has signed the decree about the protection of state borders, involving the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. According to the President, the construction will begin soon and will initially be financed from the budget of the United States, however Mexico reimburses 100 percent of costs. “It will come at the expense of Mexico ( … ) and we will refund it at the expense of Mexico, as I always say” — promised the head of the White house.

Two days earlier, Reuters reported that trump also intends to sign a decree on the revision of the agreement on free trade in North America (NAFTA) concluded between the USA, Canada and Mexico.
