Peskov called the tragedy of the destruction in Palmyra

The destruction by terrorists of the Roman theatre and Tetrapylon in Palmira — the real tragedy, however, the Syrian military did not leave plans to vacate the city, like other towns, said the official representative of the Kremlin, Dmitry Peskov. His words on Friday, January 20, the correspondent “Tapes.ru”.

“This is a tragedy from the point of view of loss of the world’s cultural heritage. The barbaric actions of terrorists continue,” — said Peskov, adding that the army of the Syrian Arab Republic intends to liberate the territory occupied by militants.

The Russian military continues to help the Syrians in their fight against terrorists, said Peskov.

Earlier it was reported that the militants of banned terrorist group “Islamic state” (ISIS) destroyed the world-famous Tetrapylon in Palmyra, and part of the Roman theatre.

The terrorists again took the city on 11 December last year, after the retreat of the government forces. Army and militia before his departure managed to evacuate 80 percent of the population.

At the end of March 2016, the Syrian army with the support of Russia freed Mira from is militants. Russian specialists also participated in the demining of the city. May 5 in the amphitheater of Palmyra hosted a concert by the Mariinsky orchestra under Valery Gergiev dedicated to the liberation of the ancient city from terrorists.

During the period of occupation serious damage was caused to many cultural sites of the city, included in the register of world heritage of UNESCO. In particular, was completely plundered the national Museum. The terrorists sold the artifacts discovered there.
