The winners of the scientific awards Breakthrough prize in 2016

Moscow. 5 Dec. INTERFAX.RU — IN mountain view (CA, USA) in the research center Ames hosted a ceremony of awarding the laureates of the annual scientific awards Breakthrough Prize in fundamental physics, mathematics and medicine, the British newspaper The Guardian.

As the award laureates will receive $3 million for further research. The total amount of awards this year amounted to about $25 million.

Physics

Awards in fundamental physics was awarded to the scientists who contributed to the development of string theory, quantum field theory and the theory of quantum gravity. They got Joseph Polchinski, Andrew Strominger and Kamran Vafa. This year was also awarded the special prize of the LIGO collaboration for the discovery of Einstein’s predicted gravitational waves.

Biology

Award for achievements in medicine and biology has got six scientists from different countries.

Winners were: Stephen Elledge who contributed to the development of cancer drugs; Harry Noller for the study of the relationship between the key role of RNA in the ribosomes and the origin of life; Roland Nusse for the study of Wnt signaling pathway and its role in triggering the processes of cell division; asinari Osumi, who opened autophagy; Huda Yahya zoghbi, the discovery of the biological reasons for the development of spinocerebellar ataxias and rett syndrome, according to the site N+1.

Math

In mathematics the prize was awarded to Belgian scientist Jean Bourgain. He was awarded for numerous studies, including work in the field of number theory, combinatorics and differential equations.

In addition, prizes of $100 thousand in the category “New horizons” is awarded to ten young scientists: six of physicists and four mathematics. Award Breakthrough Junior Challenge ($250 million), awarded to teenagers, this year went to 18-year-old Antonella Masini from Peru and a 17-year-old Deanna C from Singapore.

Prize the Breakthrough Prize was established in 2012 and is one of the largest scientific awards in the world. Its founders are the Russian physicist and entrepreneur Yuri Milner, CEO of Alibaba Group Jack MA, the head of Facebook mark Zuckerberg and one of the founders of Google — Sergey Brin.
